Tracking your debt payoff progress is the single best way to stay motivated. Here's how to build a simple spreadsheet that works with any strategy.
You've chosen a strategy โ maybe avalanche or snowball. You know which debt to attack first. Now you need a way to track progress that keeps you motivated month after month.
A debt payoff spreadsheet is the answer. It's free, customizable, and gives you a visual record of every dollar of progress.
| Debt Name | Balance | APR | Min Payment | Payment | New Balance | Status |
|---|
These seven columns capture everything you need. Add a row for each debt.
| Debt Name | Balance | APR | Min Payment | Payment | New Balance | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credit Card A | $8,000 | 24.99% | $200 | $600 | $7,566 | ๐ด Targeting |
| Credit Card B | $4,500 | 19.99% | $115 | $115 | $4,459 | ๐ก Minimum |
| Personal Loan | $5,000 | 12.00% | $150 | $150 | $4,950 | ๐ก Minimum |
| Medical Bill | $2,500 | 0% | $60 | $60 | $2,470 | ๐ข Paid Off โ |
The "New Balance" column is calculated as: Balance + (Balance ร APR รท 12) โ Payment. This accounts for the interest accrued that month.
At the end of each month, copy the "New Balance" values into a new row below. Over time, you'll see the balances shrink and the "Paid Off" statuses spread. This visual progress is incredibly motivating.
Add a summary section at the top:
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Total Debt | $20,000 |
| Total Paid This Month | $925 |
| Total Interest This Month | $316 |
| Debts Paid Off | 1 of 4 |
| Est. Payoff Date | Mar 2028 |
